I was saddened to learn via e-mail that Spoken Interludes, the spoken word reading series here in L.A., is folding its tent and heading east. But our loss will be Westchester's gain. Here's the e-mail sent out by DeLauné Michel:
Dear Story-lover,I hope this finds you well. This year has brought a lot of changes for me - the birth of my son in January - and now, my husband and I are moving to Westchester County, New York in June. As much as we love Los Angeles, we have decided that we want to raise our family back east.
Because of this, I will be ending the Spoken Interludes reading series here, and will start it up in Westchester. However, thanks to the wonderful and tireless efforts of Matthew Smith, we will be able to continue the outreach writing programs for at-risk teenagers. I am thrilled those classes will continue, ably headed by the fabulous and incomparable Andrea Quaid, and we will send out invitations to you of the students' readings at Borders Book Store so you can enjoy the stories they write.
The last two Spoken Interludes in Los Angeles will be on May 10th and June 6th. I hope you can attend one of those shows as it would be great to see you before I leave. I will miss you terribly. Over these past eight years, you have given me an experience here beyond my wildest dreams. Thanks to you, I have been a part of a vibrant, dynamic, interesting and intelligent community. I've been able to meet fascinating and wonderful people. Through your kind support, I have grown as a writer. And my life has been enriched forever by the stories read at Spoken Interludes.
I am sad to be ending the series here, but am looking forward to continuing it in Westchester. If you have any friends or family in that area - Westchester is about 30 minutes north of Manhattan on the Hudson - that you think would enjoy Spoken Interludes, please let them know that it will be starting there soon, and to check out our website for information.
Thank you again for the joyous experiences you have given me. I wish you all the best and hope our paths cross again.
warm regards
DeLauné
Spoken Interludes was kind of enough to present three of my four most recent stories. It was a stylish, smart night out in L.A. and will be missed. Check out the website (link at right under Literary Los Angeles, at least for a few more weeks) for details on the remaining shows.
