* We don't have an opinion on Christopher Sorrentino yet, although we do have a copy of his novel Trance with impressive blurbs from Jonathan Lethem and Sam Lipsyte. He'll be reading at Book Soup on July 25 at 7 p.m. PW has called Trance "a tour de force, announcing a mature and ambitious talent" so we'll definitely crack it open and have a looksee.
* We never thought we'd be so keen on a "stick figure artist" but we do enjoy Sam Brown's offerings. He'll be appearing at the Wax Poetic Gallery at an opening reception for the exhibit, my life as a cloud (Soft Skull). Kristina B will be in the gallery spinning records and refreshments will be served. Saturday, July 23, 2005, from 8 P.M. until midnight.

There will be readings, book signings, and music. There may or may not be lettuce. LA author and graduate student in the USC Writing Program, Salvador Plascencia will read from his first book The People of Paper; Joshuah Bearman is an LA Weekly editor whose frequent contributions to McSweeney’s include the forthcoming Yeti Researcher. Josh Kun, an associate professor of English at UC Riverside, is the author of Audiotopia: Music, Race, and America (UC Press), and is currently writing a book on Tijuana and editing one about Jewish mambo. He will be joined by award-winning Mexican photographer Yvonne Venegas. Raised in Tijuana, Venegas now lives and works in Mexico City and will be featured this fall in the “Strange New World/Extrano Nuevo Mundo” show at the Museum of Contemporary Art, San Diego and the Museum of Contemporary Art, La Jolla.
