Sadly, I could not snare an interview with DBC Pierre and Dan Rhodes last night due to a prior commitment they had with their Book Soup hosts. But Dan was kind enough to give me his e-mail address and we agreed to take up some of my questions that way.
I will spend some time this weekend transcribing my recording of the post-reading Q&A but I can share these early, unfocused impressions of the reading:
* The 25 chairs set out in the Book Soup Annex were not all occupied.
* Both presenters consumed beer from brown paper bags.
* Rhodes read a short story from a school notebook dated 5th October 1979 (he was seven) which included a mouse in space, an electric guitar, pop stardom and lots of peeing. He explained that he'd found his voice by seven. (The teacher's note on the page read, "This is very silly, Daniel.")
* Rhodes also read a story from his collection Anthology called Groping, which he dedicated to "your new king, Sir Arnold Schwarzenegger."
* DBC adopts a faux-American accent for his reading.
* DBC told a story about posing for a photo with a pig. (Ahh, literary stardom.)
* Nobody asked how to get an agent. (Which is not to say there wasn't a howler or two among the questioners. Transcripts planned for Monday.)
* I did ask Dan if he was still retired. He thought for a moment, and opted for "resting."
Also worth noting is that Michael Silverblatt, host of KCRW's superb book program Bookworm was in the audience. I'm not sure if the show has national reach but most of his broadcasts are archived and can be streamed. If you can overlook the goofy theme music, you'll find a host who reads closely and thoughtfully and engages his guest authors on a level that one seldom hears. He's had Rushdie, Delillo, Franzen and a host of others. Check out the archives - they're a real gold mine. And check out the live show if you're somewhere where it's broadcast.
