Edinburgh’s new aspirations to be a literary capital stem partly from the massive success of contemporary writers such as JK Rowling, Iain Banks, and Alexander McCall Smith. But there was a strong emphasis on the older heritage.At the National Library, Ms Atkinson was shown the hand-written manuscripts of both Robert Burns and Sir Walter Scott. The visit included meetings with Catherine Lockerbie, the head of the Edinburgh International Books Festival, Lesley Hinds, Edinburgh’s Lord Provost, and Lorraine Fannin, of the Scottish Publishers’ Association.
