The Independent Foreign Fiction prize shortlist has been announced, and the nominated books include one written by an Italian "collective".
The group, which comprises a postman, bouncer, librarian and social worker from Bologna and takes the name of a former Watford and England footballer as its pseudonym, caused a literary sensation last year when it became the first cooperative to write a bestseller in Italy. The spy thriller Q, translated into English by Shaun Whiteside, is set during the Reformation in Italy and Germany and is a stunning epic of action, mystery and ideas. It was also nominated for the Guardian First Book award last year.
I'm just trying to imagine all the nightmares - writing, editing, contracts, negotiations, commissions. The horror.
