Norman Mailer delivered the keynote address of Wilkes University's Pennsylvania Writers' Conference, and by all accounts it looks to have been a real barn burner ...
Mailer passed on a few pointers he felt novelists should keep in mind. His main topics of discussion were first person narratives versus third person, the pros and cons of basing characters on reality, and the role the unconscious mind plays in writing.Mailer felt that a first person narrative (using the word "I" to tell a story) could be an effective tool, alluding to the works of legendary author Earnest Hemmingway.
In his discussions about real life vs. plot life, Mailer focused a lot on character development, and how he felt it was more important than the plot of a story itself.
"Characters must keep developing and the plot will take care of itself," Mailer said.
Mailer felt that if an author wrote a novel with a particular story in mind that the possibilities would be limited.
"Our love of plot comes out of a need to show the cause and effect that our lives often do not have," Mailer said.
Whew. I hope those Pennsylvania writers buckled themselves in first ...
