The Denver Post reports on The Tattered Cover Book Store's search for possible new locations.
Four months ago, rumors circled over the fate of the Tattered Cover and other retailers as rents climbed in Cherry Creek North. The posh shopping district is being transformed by development that's attracting bigger retailers - such as Crate & Barrel - as well as an office complex, two hotels and nearly 1,500 parking spaces. "There's no question rents keep going up," Meskis said then. "Nothing stays the same. When you're in a tough economy, that definitely puts on the pressure."
There are uncomfortable echoes of the circumstances which forced the closing of Santa Monica's venerable Midnight Special - rising rents, fashionable shopping and booksellers who can't keep up. We hope Tattered Cover avoids Midnight Special's fate.
