Samir Naqqash, an Israeli author and playwright who wrote almost exclusively in the Arabic of his native Iraq, has died of a heart attack.
While achieving wide-ranging acclaim in the Arab world and particularly among the Iraqi exile community, Naqqash was little known in Israel, with only one of his 13 works translated into Hebrew.Born in Baghdad, Iraq, Naqqash emigrated to Israel with his family in 1951, but never felt comfortable in Israel, said friend and mentor, Professor Shmuel Moreh, who oversaw his doctorate in Arabic literature at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem.
"Leaving Iraq was like an expulsion for him, he saw himself as a refugee," Moreh said.
