Writing for USA Today, Bob Minzesheimer remembers Larry Brown.
We meet at noon at one of his other hangouts, Square Books, the Oxford bookstore where he found encouragement when he was putting out fires and collecting rejection letters from publishers. He talked a lot that day four years ago about writing and fishing and growing up in William Faulkner's hometown. And he did a lot of drinking while cruising the countryside in his pickup and showing off the writing cabin he was building by hand at his own fishing pond.
As for drinking, I lost count after Brown went through a six-pack of beer, several small bottles of Peppermint schnapps and a few, post-dinner shots of whiskey. By midnight, I was exhausted. But Brown was still going strong at the bar. He was treated not just as a local literary celebrity, but as a very good customer.
The Daily Mississipian also offers some local recollections.
