Hundreds of admirers turned out yesterday to bid Pierre Berton farewell in Toronto.
The giant wake included a who's who of the cultural and literary establishment, including Lloyd Robertson, Knowlton Nash, June Callwood, Allan Fotheringham, Lister Sinclair, Betty Kennedy, Rick Mercer and former prime minister John Turner.
Berton died of heart failure Nov. 30 in hospital at the age of 84. A giant black and white photo of Berton, with arms crossed and trademark bow tie untied, served as a backdrop for the stage.
Given that we unfortunates down here in Jesusland are largely unfamiliar with Berton, here's a biographical sketch and Q&A that fills in some blanks for you.
