Grand independent book stores closing, chains taking away business, libraries sitting empty. No, it's not Santa Monica, it's Kashmir.
"I used to go to the Kashmir Book Shop on Residency Road with my father who bought us a lot of books. The bookshop used to be beaming with people. The young and old Kashmiris had a natural flare for literature in those days," said Isma Sheikh, a woman with a passion for reading.
"Today a multi-purpose departmental store has replaced that grand old bookshop. Vanishing of city's only traditional bookshop is enough commentary on what has happened here," Sheikh told IANS.
