Going by potentially unnoticed in the Travel section is this pleasant little NYT look at the lovely Heritage Book Shop on Melrose Avenue.
A sampling of the shelves reveals a signed first edition of William S. Burroughs's "Naked Lunch" for $1,750. A lavishly illustrated 16th-century book of hours is $60,000. An inscribed presentation copy of Winston Churchill's "World Crisis" costs $15,000 - vanquishing the $10,000 for a copy of "Mein Kampf" signed by Hitler, which the shop recently sold. There are some first editions by Twain and Dickens below $300. "Our criteria for buying books is that there can't be more than a couple like it on the market," says Ben Weinstein, who started the business 42 years ago with his brother.
Although we're not quite sure what "vanquished" means in this context, other than "unsold." (Oh, and do note the "Mew York Times" photo credit.)
