A few questions have been raised Out There in the wake of Steve Wasserman's resignation, and we figured we'd take a moment to answer them. Specifically:
Sarah asks what Wasserman's departure means for the Thumbnails? Answer: Absolutely nothing - we're still committed to providing the service for as long as readers deem it interesting/valuable and, if anything, it might become even more interesting in the months ahead as it chronicles the inevitable shift from boring pamphlet to whatever the review becomes. We're in for the long haul.
Ed asks if the Book Review is a lost cause? Answer: No, of course not. At the risk of sounding a bit pollyanna, nothing's a lost cause (not even the Democratic Party). If anything, the opportunity this presents, the possibility of change for the better, these are all reasons for excitement. There's a deep pool of talented people in this city, and many of them are gnawing at the bit for an opportunity to breathe some new life into that sucker. (Although the whispers we're hearing about succession aren't giving us much cause for hope at the moment - but we hold out hope.) And to be fair to Wasserman, there were moments of competence and even flashes of distinction along the way, as past Thumbnails have chronicled. At a minimum, LATBR is no more a lost cause than any other Book Review eking out an existence these days.
Finally, our pal Tod Goldberg gets all mushy on us and fesses up about his recent lunch with Mr. W.
Was it over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor?
