HOLLYWOOD - The American Cinematheque presents on May 5th at the Egyptian, a Lecture about "James Joyce's 'The Dead' and Cinema," featuring a look at screen adaptations by filmmakers John Huston and Roberto Rossellini. Thursday, May 5, 2005: Egyptian Theatre (Spielberg Theatre): The Thursday, May 5th program is a 7:30 PM Lecture: "James Joyce's 'The Dead' and Cinema" by Kevin Barry (Illustrated lecture approximately 60 min.). John Huston and Roberto Rossellini both re-shaped James Joyce's famous 1914 story "The Dead" for new audiences of cinema. Rossellini's VIAGGIO IN ITALIA (1953), the last of 'Ingrid's trilogy,' transformed the story that Joyce's hand is scarcely detectable. By contrast, Huston's THE DEAD (1987) has satisfied its audiences as a reliable version of an original classic. This lecture by Irish author and film historian Kevin Barry will describe the surprising affinities between these major works of Huston and Rossellini: films in which almost nothing happens, films intimate with death, failures of men, and the collapse of any confidence for a better future.
