The Book Standard reports on the sales of A Million Little Pieces which have been, unsurprisingly, stratospheric.
The Oprah-sanctioned paperback edition of Frey’s rehab memoir sold 140,000 units for the week ending Oct. 23, as reported by Nielsen BookScan—beating out debut stars Lemony Snicket (The Penultimate Peril) and Nicholas Sparks (At First Sight).
Recently observed at a B&N bookstore (at The Grove in Los Angeles):
Two rangy guys in their late teens/early twentysomethings approach the young woman behind the Information Desk. She regards them with something less than enthusiasm. "We're, uh, looking for this book, something about lots of pieces, or --"
"A Million Little Pieces," she says pertly.
"Yeah. Um, who wrote it?"
"James Frey."
"Yeah. Him. So d'you have it?"
"It's sold out."
Both guys literally do a doubletake. "It's sold out? Why is it sold out?"
"It's an Oprah pick."
They squirm and grimace like little girls poking at earthworms. "Ew! Gross! We don't want to read it then, do we?"
Other friend, displaying a startling independence of mind: "No."
They saunter off.
Really no point to this anecdote, just felt like relaying it instead of doing, you know, real work.
(Am not a Frey fan, although anyone who beats out Sparks is okay by me.)
