Sarah at Galleycat scoops us with the news that John Banville is entering genre fiction territory under the pseudonym Benjamin Black. (Guess it wouldn't kill us to read our Deal Lunch every so often ... )
According to the deal writeup, Banville -- using the handy pseudonym of Benjamin Black -- will launch a new series featuring a Dublin pathologist by the name of Quirke. In the first installment, QUIRKE, due out about a year from now) our hero will investigate "a murderous plot at the heart of the Catholic establishment of Dublin and Boston." I'll make a gander and suspect it'll have a little bit to do with the Church's ongoing child abuse scandal, but then again, maybe not.
Sarah muses that reading capsule descriptions of The Sea set her wondering how he'd handle a crime novel. There's already a closer attempt in his oeuvre - the Booker shortlisted The Book of Evidence. (Banville shows his ongoing tendency to return to names he's fond of. "Quirke" is also the name of the feckless caretaker of Alexander Cleave's childhood home in Eclipse.)
