The doors have opened at 826MI.
A writing workshop program for young people, 826 originated in San Francisco in 2002. Dave Eggers, author of the best-selling novel "A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius,'' used money he earned from the book to launch 826 Valencia, a nonprofit organization that helps kids 6 to 18 improve their writing skills. The program is built around free workshops and drop-in tutoring. There are now six 826 centers in the United States, including Ann Arbor's.
Be nice to Detroit or the puppy gets it! Or be really nice and we'll sic Eminem on Meester Almond.
Actually, I got the posting through some kind of writer's group or "have been to a writer's retreat" mailing list and was both pleased and not surprised that it opened in Ann Arbor. Don't diss the double A - it's the liberal intelligentsia capital of the Midwest. Except for the Republican townies, but what do you expect? But it does give hope to those of us in suburbia (like flies trapped in amber) that art and literature and shit like that aren't purely coastal.

The folks at 826 Michigan are the home of the International Monster's Union and are having a Monster's Ball fundraiser this Saturday in Ann Arbor - Elizabeth Kostova and Julie Orringer to read.
Enjoy,
