So, have you ever noticed that the wingnuts never ever can say anything good about the work of a writer whose politics they loathe? Have you ever heard one say, "Well, I hate that leftist fucker Coetzee but holy shit can he turn a phrase?" Whereas it's not at all uncommon to hear someone say "Well, I revile Amis' politics but damn, do I love Lucky Jim." We're just sayin' ...
Actually, they don't bother to say anything about these writers' work at all. Not one of the right-wing critics of either Jelinek or Pinter has mustered up a critical reading of anything these writers have written, aside from the most explicitly political things they've produced. A blanket statement that he/she is "a bad writer" is all these critics have to say. As if we should take their word for it.

Excellent point! I've noticed that as well and wondered about it. I think you're on to something big -- something fundamental (ahem) about contemporary conservatism. Would love to see more written about this.
