The Globe and Mail, all Jeopardy-like, runs the answers to its 10th literary quiz and apparently there were 13 perfect scores. We reviewed the 40 questions and knew, like, what - maybe half? Going down hill. With a tailwind. (But we never said we were smart enough to be Canadian.)
40. The novel that ends, "A nurse came out to fetch me, and I turned and followed her inside, and it was if I were walking into the sea," is John Banville's The Sea.
I finally got around to that book. It took me a while to settle into Banville's prose but at the end I immediately wanted to re-read it. I still can't get over his description of some scenes--the colours, the angle of the light coming in--, just awesome. Thanks for recommending it! (I don't pay attention to book prizes so if it weren't for you I wouldn't have considered picking it up.)
I'm trying to figure out which Banville book to get next.
