The wildly talented Gary Shteyngart chats with Bloomberg about the state of affairs in modern-day Absurdistan, um Russia.
Kazakina: Does Absurdistan exist?
Shteyngart: It was a bit like assembling Lego blocks. First of all, I loved Heidar Aliev, dictator of Azerbaijan who passed the country on to his son (which also happens in the book). And then there was the American and British presence -- BP, Halliburton, Chevron. A lot of this stuff just came to me when I was lounging around the Hyatt hotel in Azerbaijan, where all the deals were made.
Now, it's not like we don't have enough to read, but we're vaguely disappointed not to have seen a copy of Absurdistan come over the transom yet, so if any of our pals from Random House are reading this morning, ahem ...
