This is Dave Shields back with more Tour de France analysis. What a race this is turning out to be! Each time they run a stage that appeared destined to sort things out, the leader board has become more complicated instead... until today. American Floyd Landis just turned in an incredible performance. He responded to every attack and then drove the final survivors to the line where he ultimately grabbed the yellow jersey by a scant eight seconds.
I’ve never seen a Tour de France where so many riders were in contention at the halfway point of the race, but today’s stage shut the door on a slew of them. There are still a lot of contenders who could steal Floyd’s thunder. Besides that, any top ten finish is very prestigious and there are other honors to be claimed on the road to Paris as well, so expect furious racing even by the men no longer in contention for the overall win.
The dynamic is really complex because in the Tour de France you have twenty teams fighting for the same prizes on the same field at the same time. In an earlier post I explained how it takes more energy to lead the peloton than to ride in the group. A cycling team’s cumulative energy is a their most valuable asset, and this years race is seriously back-loaded in difficulty. What I mean by that is that the toughest stages are yet to come. Do Landis and his team have enough left in the tank to hold onto the lead all the way to Paris? What a week of racing we have in store!
