We've promised ourselves to try to be a bit, you know, nicer this year but reviews like this one make us think it's time to return to the tough love of the Los Angeles Times Book Review Thumbnail ®.
Certainly the English-language prose on these pages flows easily and thoughts, images and perceptions are acutely rendered, and in the end it is to them that the reader will gravitate, grateful in this case that he has been enabled to glimpse into a closed society and beyond that into some eternal human verities.
Sorry, but Ismail Kadare deserves better than this. We can only assume editors were off on vacation.
