Jodi Picoult might be a grand master, and her new novel Nineteen Minutes a classic, but I can't imagine anyone, anyone ever, topping Jim Shepard's telling of a school shooting in 2005's Project X. Oh, I know -- school shootings. Must we? No headlines-turned-literature please. But for anyone who missed Project X, good lord, buy it, read it, stare off in amazement and disbelief. And then check out this identity theory interview to hear Jim on Charles Baxter, troubled adolescents, and the diminishing returns research yields a fiction writer.
Have you read Vernon God Little? If so, is Project X better than that? If not, I'll read Project X if you read Vernon God Little. VGL's so friggin' good I would start a cult around it if I weren't so lazy...
