Tomorrow marks my debut in the New York Times Book Review, in which I review James Wilcox's Hunk City. Here's the opening paragraph:
Change has come to Tula Springs, La. Readers familiar with St. Jude Parish from James Wilcox’s first novel, “Modern Baptists” (1983), may have trouble recognizing the place today. There’s a Starbucks in the Piggly Wiggly. The Sonny Boy Bargain Store, rechristened Redds, is now part of the BurgerMat empire. Romance unfolds in chat rooms, and Viagra-touting spam finds at least one willing customer. The globalized marketplace has pressed its thumb on Tula Springs, uncorking a plethora of brands including Vera Wang, Armani, Dolce & Gabbana and Christian Louboutin. We’ve come a long way from the Ajax Feed and Seed and bourbon and Tabs at Juniors.
You can read the review in its entirety here.
Nice Mark,
I've been picking up copies of the various Wilcox novels over the past couple of years since reading Modern Baptists with the intent of catching up on all the developments in Tula Springs - maybe this will spur me into cracking them.

Ah yes, the key word here, 'Viagra' gets in amongst the emails I see coming in the works' email box. Then that much frequented spot of mine, Starbucks where cashiers speak a language I can't quite decipher.
I've read the excerpts from the novel and I like it already.
Your comment on the Dickensian eye for details is also another factor which makes me want to get a copy somehow for Dickens' works for me are just simply divine.

Say, congratulations. That's quite a feather in your cap. And a nice review as well.
I'm curious: did you wait to approach them until your novel was bought? Word on the street is that they strongly prefer to assign reviews to published authors.

Thanks for bringing this writer to my attention. (It's also nice to read a sharp and generous review).
