It's 95 degrees on the westside and us without a/c ... yikes ... at any rate, we've got some cleaning to do around here, a collection of useful and interesting links that we've been sitting on longer than we should. So we're clearing out the backlog to prep for what we hope will be an interesting September, including the inauguration of yet another new feature dedicated specifically to small presses, about which more anon. Until then:
Do read Delia Falconer's thoughtful essay on the problem of condensing classic novels. (We're great fans her of novel The Lost Thoughts of Soldiers.) Check out The Flash - 100 stories by 100 writers (including the likes of Percival Everett and Aimee Bender) with proceeds going to Amnesty International ... We're enjoying The Education of Oronte Churm ... as well The Wooden Spoon ... Sarabande Books has gotten into the blogging game ... as has Penguin ... and PEN America has done the same with a blog we like enough to add to our blogroll ... LA Reads has their debut meeting this Thursday, to discuss Mildred Pierce ... KQED's The Writers' Block features readings of short fiction, non-fiction and poetry ... and, finally, one of our far-flung readers wrote in expressing sorrow at Grace Paley's passing, saying "would be so cool if you could post this pic." So post it we do.
Thanks for the mention!

I didn't realize Grace Paley was ever that young.

I enjoyed Delia's essay immensely, and like you, sat on it, Mark. Thanks for the reminder.
