Norman Mailer has been hospitalized.
The 84-year-old was taken to Manhattan's Mount Sinai Hospital with acute respiratory problems and underwent surgery.
One of his former wives, Carol Mailer, spoke to The New York Post about his frail condition.
"He's not in very good shape. It's breaking my heart," she said.
A Mailerless Universe will suck, and I'm not even exactly sure why.

he seems to be on the mend. as he said in an interview in new york magazine recently: "Generally speaking, however, most souls are probably not willing to die that easily."

I wonder when he was hospitalized. I ate lunch on that day, the 18th, at the Oyster Bar Saloon in Grand Central Station and Mr. Mailer passed by me and sat at the table behind me. My wife and I admired his seersucker blazer, deciding I definitely need a seersucker suit. There was no question it was him. Of course if he was hospitalized in the morning, then I (and the Maitre D') mistook another slow walking, slightly crumpled, yet commanding elder gent for a hero.
