We don't do lots of non-fiction giveaways around here, but we quite enjoyed Steven Johnson's The Ghost Map, his story of the infamous London cholera epidemic and the man who unlocked its mysteries. The New York Times said "There's a great story here...and Johnson recounts it well....His book is a formidable gathering of small facts and big ideas, and the narrative portions are particularly strong, informed by real empathy for both his named and his nameless characters..." and the Washington Post called it "a medical thriller, detective story and paean to city life, Johnson's account of the outbreak and its modern implications is a true page-turner." There's also a remarkably detailed and well-presented website up in support of the book.
Thanks to our fine friends at Riverhead, we're pleased to offer a copy of the newly released paperback edition of The Ghost Map. You know the drill, friends. Drop an email, subject line "BOOKS IN THE TIME OF CHOLERA." You must include your full mailing address and, since we're on the road, we'll take all action until noon Saturday PST. Then we turn to the Random Number Generator to declare a winner. Until then, let's be careful out there.
UPDATE: Congratulations to winner Alan Mathison of NY, NY.
