Many thanks to all of you who braved an unusually warm September afternoon and came out to yesterday's West Hollywood Book Fair. And special thanks to all who actually came up and said hello. It's also a pleasure to meet our regulars.
Because we were in panel mode, we didn't take careful notes with any eye toward blogging the event in detail. However, George at 1904 has a recap of the day up at his site and other recaps are sure to follow.
The day's most memorable panel for us was "Around the World: Fiction in Foreign Lands," which - despite some so-so moderation - resulted in a lively and wide-ranging conversation from the likes of David Francis, Lisa Fugard, Gina Nahai and Ngugi Wa’Thiongo, who was present and speaking despite recent throat surgery. These writers spoke movingly and insightfully about notions of home and culture and writing across distance. Wa'Thiongo was particularly fascinating on the role of language, suggesting that the language in which one writes enormously influences and directs creative choices.
