Evel Knievel has died, which isn't remotely literary but represents a part of our youth. It dates us for sure, but this was one of our favorite toys.

In his recent TEV guest review of Home Land, Jim Ruland called Sam Lipsyte the "funniest writer of his generation," and we're quite inclined to agree. We tore through Home Land in two joyful sittings and can't remember the last time we've laughed so hard. Lipsyte's constellation of oddly sympathetic losers is rendered with a sparkling, inspired prose style that's sent us off in search of all his prior work. In Lewis Miner's (a.k.a Teabag) woeful epistolary dispatches to his high school alumni newsletter ("I did not pan out."), we find an anti-hero for the age. Highly, highly recommended.
Yeah, I had one of those too. It was huge for me.

Color me dated as well. I'm the exact same age, and recall a time when every boy owned this toy. We used to have Evel Kneivel races up and down our block -- it was a time, it was a place.

Ini addition to the motor cycle toy, I also had the jet-thing he used to try to jump the Snake River -- was it the snake river? columbia? something like that. Unfortunately I recall that the toy sucked big time, because it couldn't clear the distance between the sofa and the ottoman in our family room, either.

Damn, that is exactly what I said as well when I saw this post, "OMG, I had one of those when I was a kid." And yes, we used to race them in the neighborhood. Of course, this was back when it was actually safe to hang out in a neighborhood with other kids. My goodness, so many memories.
R.I.P. Evel Knievel.
Best, and keep on blogging.
