We have an odd one today. We're not much for audiobooks, generally, but we couldn't resist when an unabridged version of The Old Man and the Sea read by none other than Donald Sutherland came across our desk, courtesy of Simon & Schuster Audio.
(Actually, our favorite Donald Sutherland memory is this exchange from the movie Animal House, in which he played the professor Jennings. It should warm the heart of many a novelist:
Jennings: Teaching is just a way to pay the bills until I finish my novel.
Boon: How long you been workin' on it?
Jennings: Four and a half years.
Pinto: It must be very good.
Jennings: It's a piece of shit. Would anyone like to smoke some pot? )
Anyway, Hem needs no pimping from us, but you can listen to a clip here. So if you want the 3-CD set, you know the drill. Drop us a line, subject line "THE OLD MAN AND THE CD". As ever, include your full mailing address. We'll take all entries until 8 p.m. PST, at which time the Random Number Generator will send the vocal stylings of Mr. Sutherland into one lucky mailbox.
UPDATE: Congratulations to our winner, Connie McGinnis of Metropolis, IL.
He gives a fine Milton lecture as well - or attempts to. Complete with apple.
