Last night at the LA Public Library, Mark Sarvas conversed with Andrew Sean Greer. Mark asked Andrew, "Do we know the ones we love?" and Andrew said, "For sure not." Other topics discussed were Ford Madox Ford, literary stealing, inter-novel conversation, the varied pleasures of reading, what a book review ought to be, and John Updike's frustrating tendency to reveal plot points in The New Yorker.
Topics not discussed: happiness, real and imagined.
The library is behind on archiving their podcasts, but when this one goes up, surely we can rely on Mark to alert us.
During the Q & A, Andy was asked by an audience member (who graciously told him she liked his book mostly) why he didn't wear his glasses for his author photo. "I'm wearing my glasses tonight because I have a sty," he told her. "That's personal."
I took a picture with my mobile phone, but I must get someone round to my house to show me how to move it from my phone to my computer. (Now I have revealed I have a mobile phone, and friends around the world will complain, "You told me you didn't have a mobile phone!" but in fact it's never on and I don't even know what the number is. I swear.)
