MOTEV gets all the family ink around here but Chad Post's coverage about Jean-Marie Le Clezio's rights director at Gallimard reminds me of a story my father once told me about dealing with the French.
My dad collects car toys - specifically, toy MGs. His collection, which he's begun to dismantle, was actually the largest of its kind in the world. (Obsessions clearly run in the family.)
At any rate, he found himself in the streets of Paris many years ago, and in the window of an antique shop he spotted an exceedingly rare MG that he desperately longed to add to the collection. He stepped inside and the following exchange took place:
FOTEV (speaking no French): Hello. How much is that car in the window?
LE PATRON (looking FOTEV over): You are americain?
FOTEV (nodding): Yes.
LE PATRON (picking up Le Figaro): Not for sale.
Ahhh, plus ca change ...
