Marilynne Robinson joined Michael Silverblatt (who remembered the pre-Broyard Housekeeping as his "cherished secret") in an hour long conversation tonight at the Los Angeles Public Library, and although we were tired and recovering from our last cold, there was no way we were going to miss the event. We're terrible note takers, and these two are marvelously circular in their oratory, so the fault lies not in our authors but in our blogger if any of the transcribed Robinson highlights below fail to convey the overall wonderfulness of this event:
* "I wasn't young when I was writing [Housekeeping] but I might as well have been."
* "There's nothing in the world I admire more than a good sermon."
* "We are ... alienated from anything we can call the past ... This is a great impoverishment."
* Characterizing the challenge of writing as "to maintain my faith in the truth of what I was lying about."
*" There must be something beyond words ... a state of being that I would consider ideal."
* She noted that we all employ (and she works to avoid) a shorthand that is "inadequate to the real experience of life."
* She admitted "I am not too crazy about Joyce."
* "I don't like plot very much - please contain your surprise. ... It becomes a big machine that carries everything after it."
* Asked what she is reading right now, she cited Bertrand Russell, William James, Sigmund Freud and her favorite, Wallace Stevens, likening the experience to "an old empire that has vanished and left its relics."
The only thing wrong with this otherwise glorious literary outing was the number of empty seats, although at around 175, the attendance was good for L.A. standards. Still, LAPL's ALOUD program is the best venue in this city for hearing world-class authors, and the tickets are free. FREE, folks. Sure, it's downtown, but the parking is cheap and there's great food and drinks right next door. So support this great program, and in exchange, we'll leave you with a short (and shaky) video of Robinson reading from Home.
I believe the website said the event was sold out when I checked it last week. Bummer.

I bet that was a treat. Home is sitting in my TBR pile and it's calling my name.

Thanks for the video. I decided to stay home and watch the World Series and was feeling guilty about that but, thanks to your reporting skills, I at least get a glimpse.

The world series is on? I swear, I had no idea.
JW, what usually happens is, because it's easy and free to reserve a ticket, folks grab up seats but don't show. (They stay home to watch the Series ... ) But they always release the open seats, and I have never seen anyone turned away. I think the only truly full house I've seen there was for Michael Chabon.

Michael who? Just kidding. Thanks for the info - hopefully she'll stay on this every three to four year track and we'll see her out here again soon.

Mark, thanks for the shout out on the Robinson program on our ALOUD series. And thanks for elaborating on our reservation policy. We always overbook because PEOPLE WITH RESERVATIONS DON'T SHOW UP. We encourage people to come on standby and we release tix before start time. It almost always works. Rarely do we turn people away, but it's always good to make an alternate plan just in case. Louise

In case my readers are wondering, Louise is the series curator, and if she says they rarely turn people away, you can take it to the bank ...

anyone know if audio of the event is or will me made available?

ALOUD does put up podcasts - my chat with Andrew Sean Greer is in the archives - but it tends to take about a month or two.

Hi Mark, great post!
did you and your readers also know that LA36 rebroadcasts ALOUD and Zocalo events on its cable channel and website?
http://www.la36.org/schedule.html
These days, I watch broadcasts of sold out events on channels 36 and 35 on my TimeWarner Cable system in Echo Park...
