Tayeb Salih, best known as the author of Season of Migration to the North, has died.
Salih, one of the best known and most translated Arabic novelists of the 20th century, studied in Britain and spent much of his working life in Europe.
He was a broadcaster for the BBC Arabic Service and worked at the U.N. Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) in Paris.
Laila Lalami - at whose urging we read Season - remembers Salih at her site.
