I'm teaching The Moviegoer to my UCLA students this semester, so I've been steeping myself in everything to do with Walker Percy. I just stumbled on this clip of his 1989 commencement speech at Notre Dame.
I will be quiet here for a few days, but have not relapsed. Updates will resume mid-week.
Thank you Mark for this clip of Walker Percy, one of my favorite authors. Years ago, I had the privilege of being taught Constitutional Law by his brother Billips at Tulane Law School. I only wish I could sit in your class and hear you speak of "The Moviegoer," a book I've read twice, and think of when driving between New Orleans and Gulfport, remembering the young stock broker in his sports car feeling that odd kind of blues after leaving Gentilly with his secretary. A feeling I and a lot of others, I'm sure have had while traveling, but couldn't quite put their finger on it until they read this book by Walter Percy.
