I was shown tremendous hospitality by the lovely people of Christchurch when I attended a literary festival there in 2008. My hotel room looked directly down on the cathedral which now lies in ruins. I live in earthquake land myself, but I'm speechless at the devastation of a city where I spent such happy days. My prayers and wishes go out to everyone there, as they dig out of the rubble and begin rebuilding their lives.
I haven't been to Christchurch, but I have been to New Zealand twice and the folks there are wonderful. Such a beautiful, lovely and underrated country in many ways. Such a devastating time, I had to stop watching television today, 24 hours updates on the rescue attempts, was like Sept 11 and the recent Qld floods all over again.

Yes, our thoughts and prayers are with the people of Christchurch. We, of course, have had blanket media coverage here in Australia, and it has invoked a kind of accumulated grief, as the last comment suggests: the shock, the dust, the raw pain in a familiar cityscape rendered surreal.

It's been nearly 24 years since I walked through the beautiful cathedral in Christchurch. Let's continue to pray for the lovely and friendly people of that wonderful city.
